For managers, including project managers and managing directors in the construction industry, an SMSTS training course will offer a better understanding of their responsibilities. Our Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is designed to provide attendees with the health and safety knowledge and skills required for their job. Our courses can be attended at one of our training locations in a classroom, or we are able to offer training remotely via Zoom.
Who should attend an SMSTS training course?
The course is ideal for construction professionals such as site managers and quantity surveyors, but it is also an excellent course for more senior construction professionals, like project directors, who want to update their skills and knowledge.
Essentially, if your role means you are responsible for teams of construction workers and you need to plan, organise and monitor their work output, but in a safe and compliant way, this is the course for you.
What does the SMSTS course cover?
As part of the training course, all attendees with understand the importance of regular risk assessments on site and within the workplace. They will also learn how to identify, monitor and control various hazards that are associated with the construction and civil engineering sectors. In more detail, our SMSTS training course will cover:
- The Health & Safety at Work Act 1984.
- Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
- Reporting of Injuries, Diseases & Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013.
- Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015.
- Working at Height Regulations 2005.
- Provision & Use of Work Equipment 1998.
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
- Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
- Confined spaces.
Attendees will be required to carry out syndicate exercises as well as four core exercises pertaining to the Plan, Do, Check & Act (HSG65) requirements, conducting site briefings and how to set up a site.
How long is the SMSTS training course?
Our SMSTS training is a full time course over five days and attendees will need to complete case studies and a variety of exercises during the training to the satisfaction of the course leader. We expect a 100% attendance rate from each candidate; attending every training session ensures a better pass rate as well as being a mandatory requirement in order to take the exam.
At the end of the training, delegates will be required to sit an exam that consists of 25 questions, 18 of which are multiple choice and seven are written. They will need to achieve an 81% pass rate in order to receive their certification.
Once you have achieved your SMSTS certification, it is valid for a maximum of five years from the date of course completion. However, we always recommend you attend an SMSTS refresher course after approximately three years. This is because legislation within the construction and civil engineering sectors change on a regular basis. Our refresher courses, which are usually over two days, ensure you are completely up-to-date with the latest rules, regulations and guidance.
